Scary Moment In Time

So the other night Doug was smoking a roast for dinner out in the smoker on our deck. I was inside playing with Davey on the floor of his room. Doug needed my help real quick, so I left Davey on the floor and followed Doug out to the deck shutting the door behind me. Well the one thing that I hate about this rental is the locks. You can never tell from the inside if the handle to the door is locked or not. I didn't think about the handle being locked as I shut the door. Well.... It was. Locked door with baby inside = one crazy mamma! Doug and I both panicked. We didn't have our keys with us, and all the windows and the front door were locked. No other way into the house. I kept thinking if I have to, I will just break the window, but with it being a rental and all I wanted to use that as the last resort. I did have a bobby pin in my hair so I started to do what I have seen others do on TV. I tried to pick the lock. Of course I had no idea on how to really pick a lock, but I kept trying. David started getting upset and I could here him start to cry. I kept reassuring him that I would be in soon, I am pretty sure he couldn't hear me, but I had to console him nonetheless. We tried the front door and some windows just in case. Of course they were locked as we had thought. Then all of a sudden Doug remembered we have a mail slot in our front door! Aha! So we ran to the front door and tried to get our hands inside. They barely fit, and it wasn't the handle that was locked but the dead bolt which we couldn't reach. Doug found a screw driver in the garage and took the mail slot completely off so there was more arm room. Then he found a long clamp of some sort which he used to reach the bolt at the top of the door. After I said several prayers I was finally started to think we were going to get in. We still couldn't get the bolt unlocked because we couldn't tell how the bolt was situated. So I went to the car and found a CD which we used as a mirror to determine what our next move would be. So with the clamp, a CD, and Doug's smooth Macgyver skills he was able to open the door. I ran into Davey where he lay crying. I picked him up and looked at the clock. It really felt like an hour or so had passed by but after I looked at the time I realized that less than15 minutes had passed. I am just glad he was still in his room, although crying a little bit, he was perfectly fine. I hope this is the last scary moment we have in a long while.
